As a medical professor, one of my responsibilities is to educate and prepare students for the use and implementation of technology in clinical practice. In this context, I will address the following prompts related to a clinical practice technology of my choice, its advantages and disadvantages, legal, ethical and privacy issues, and the application of complexity leadership principles to successfully introduce the innovation into organizations.

1. Provide a brief overview of a clinical practice technology of your choice.

The clinical practice technology I have chosen to discuss is electronic health records (EHRs). EHRs are digital versions of patients’ medical records that can be easily accessed by healthcare providers for treatment, care coordination, research, and other purposes.

2. How is this technology being used to improve clinical practice or care delivery?

EHRs can improve clinical practice and care delivery by providing timely and accurate health information, reducing medical errors, streamlining healthcare delivery, and improving patient outcomes. EHRs have the potential to enhance population health management and support evidence-based clinical decision-making.

3. Briefly discuss any relevant advantages/disadvantages of the use of the selected technology.

Advantages of EHRs include improved care coordination, increased patient safety, streamlined healthcare delivery, and improved healthcare outcomes. EHRs can also save time and effort by reducing paperwork and improving communication between healthcare providers. One disadvantage of EHRs is the potential for an increased workload due to the initial implementation and maintenance of the system. Other potential disadvantages include data breaches, privacy concerns, and reduced face-to-face interaction between patients and healthcare providers.

4. Discuss any legal, ethical, and/or privacy issues relevant to the use of the selected technology.

Legal, ethical, and privacy issues associated with EHRs include the potential for data breaches, the sharing of sensitive health information with third parties, and the possibility of unintended consequences such as errors or delays. Ethical considerations include the obligation to protect patient privacy, the potential for discrimination based on health status, and the need to ensure informed consent for data sharing and use.

By explicitly recognizing and valuing the contributions of frontline staff, leaders can provide the necessary support and resources to successfully implement EHRs while minimizing any potential disruptions to the organization’s workflow.
