Introduction:

The critical appraisal of research studies is an essential aspect of evidence-based practice in medicine. As a medical professor, my responsibility is to create assignments and provide feedback to medical college students, which includes evaluating their performance through examinations and assignments. In this assignment, students are required to demonstrate comprehension of two quantitative research studies and conduct a critical appraisal using the “Research Critique Guidelines – Part II” document. They must summarize two quantitative studies and use a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources published within the last five years, appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.

Answer to Assessment Description:

The critical appraisal of research studies is vital in determining the relevance and significance of the research findings for nursing practice. The two quantitative research articles chosen for this assignment are “The Effect of Patient-Controlled Analgesia on the Incidence of Postoperative Pneumonia in a Chinese Hospital: A Quasi-Experimental Study” by Zhou, et al. (2019) and “Effectiveness of Education via a Mobile Application for Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” by Ali et al. (2020).

Zhou, et al. (2019) aimed to investigate the effect of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) on the incidence of postoperative pneumonia in a Chinese hospital. The study consisted of a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 166 participants, who were divided into two groups: the experimental group received PCA, while the control group received traditional analgesia. The results showed that the incidence of postoperative pneumonia was significantly lower in the experimental group. However, the study had some limitations concerning the study design, such as the lack of randomization and the small sample size.

Ali et al. (2020), on the other hand, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of education via a mobile application for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The study included eleven randomized controlled trials with a total of 888 participants. The results showed that education via a mobile application had a significant effect on glycemic control, diabetes knowledge, and self-efficacy in patients with T2DM. However, the study had some limitations, such as the heterogeneity among the included studies and the lack of blinding of the participants.

In conclusion, the critical appraisal of quantitative research studies is essential in evaluating the relevance and significance of the findings for nursing practice. Both studies provide insights into the effectiveness of interventions in improving patient outcomes. However, the studies had some limitations that need to be considered in interpreting the results.
