You will write a paper that contains a minimum of 4 pagesbut no longer than 6 pages for this course as its portfolio project. Your paper will address a topic of global nursing shortage, the topic associated with global health and health disparities.

Nursing shortage in the United Stated is a problem that we all have been aware of for the longest time. This problem is notisolated only in our country; it is a global phenomenon. As someof you may have heard, there are nursing agencies who bring in international nurses to the U.S. to alleviate the severity of nursing shortage. One may ask if it is ethically justifiable to doso, especially when those foreign nurses are from the developing countries. From the same token, is it ethical for the nurses to come to the U.S. or to some other developed countries, leaving their own countries in a worse public health and a more severe nursing shortage? The answer to this question may vary, depending on whom you ask. What about from the legal standpoints? Does hiring international nurses to come work inthe U.S. pose any legal issues/concerns to us, the nursesthemselves, and/or the nurses’ home countries?

This portfolio project gives you an opportunity to freely explore/learn of the issue from a global perspective. Sourcesinclude published literature from peer-reviewed journals obtainedfrom the BSN library databases and acceptable internet sources (refer to the acceptable resources for writing assignments posted in the course).

Introduction:

The global nursing shortage is a crucial issue that has been affecting the healthcare industry for many years. This shortage is not limited to the United States, but it is a global problem that requires immediate attention. Healthcare professionals have been turning to international nurses to fill the gaps in the nursing workforce. However, this poses the question of whether hiring international nurses is ethically and legally justifiable. This paper will explore the issue of the global nursing shortage from a global perspective, examining both ethical and legal issues.

1. What are some of the contributing factors to the global nursing shortage?

There are several factors that contribute to the global nursing shortage, including an aging workforce, low wages, long working hours, increasing patient loads, and inadequate staffing. These factors make it challenging for healthcare organizations to retain nurses and recruit new ones. Additionally, many nurses are leaving the profession due to burnout, stress, and dissatisfaction with their working conditions.

2. What are the implications of hiring international nurses to mitigate the nursing shortage in developed countries?

While hiring international nurses can help address the nursing shortage in developed countries, it can also have significant implications for the nurses and their home countries. Some argue that hiring international nurses is unethical, as it can deprive developing countries of their healthcare professionals. Additionally, international nurses may experience cultural shock and other challenges when working in a foreign country, which can impact their well-being and job satisfaction.

3. What are the legal issues associated with hiring international nurses to work in developed countries?

Hiring international nurses to work in developed countries can pose several legal issues, including work visa restrictions, language barriers, and differences in nursing practice standards. Healthcare organizations must adhere to legal requirements when hiring international nurses, including obtaining the appropriate work permits and ensuring compliance with local regulations.

4. What can be done to address the global nursing shortage?

To address the global nursing shortage, healthcare organizations must focus on improving working conditions, increasing wages, and investing in nursing education and training programs. Governments can also play a role by implementing policies that incentivize nurses to stay in the profession and attract new ones. Additionally, healthcare organizations can work with international nursing associations to establish ethical guidelines for hiring international nurses.

Conclusion:

The global nursing shortage is a complex issue that requires a global perspective. Healthcare organizations must consider both ethical and legal implications when hiring international nurses to mitigate the nursing shortage in developed countries. However, addressing the nursing shortage requires a multifaceted approach that includes investing in nursing education and training, improving working conditions, and implementing government policies that incentivize nurses to join and stay in the profession.
