Purpose

Equity in care is an essential feature of quality healthcare. Implicit and explicit bias can be found in healthcare providers and patients. Unknowingly, these biases can impact patient-clinician interactions, potentially affect outcomes of care, and support systemic structural inadequacies. This assignment will give you an opportunity to explore implicit bias on a personal and healthcare system level. (10 points)

Directions

1.     View videos

1. UCLA video series on implicit bias (7 videos with total of 29 minutes)

2. “Respect Ability” (3 minutes) –

2.     Review the text and view first three videos (6 minutes total) “Six Interventions to Tackle Unconscious or Implicit Bias” National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC)

3.     After reading all the materials and viewing the videos, click on the link in the NCCC site and take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) –

4.     Assignment:

After completing all of the readings, video viewing, and the IAT, write a 2-3-page (bullet points optional) summary that answers the following questions:

1.     What is the difference between explicit and implicit bias?

2.     What did you learn from taking the IAT? Were you surprised by the results? Will you think about how to change certain behaviors?

3.     How do you think that awareness of the existence of explicit and implicit bias might impact you as a health care manager or supervisor?

Introduction:

In healthcare, equity in care is crucial for providing quality healthcare. However, unconscious or implicit bias can impact patient-clinician interactions, affect outcomes of care, and support systemic structural inadequacies. This assignment aims to explore implicit bias on a personal and healthcare system level through videos, text, and Implicit Association Test (IAT).

1. What is the difference between explicit and implicit bias?

Explicit bias refers to the conscious and deliberate belief or attitude towards a particular group of people based on their identity. Meanwhile, implicit bias is the unconscious or automatic association of a particular group of people based on their identity. Explicit bias is easier to recognize and address compared to implicit bias, which is often unrecognized and can be challenging to overcome.

2. What did you learn from taking the IAT? Were you surprised by the results? Will you think about how to change certain behaviors?

Taking the IAT made me realize that even individuals who believe they are unbiased may show implicit bias. I was surprised by my results and the automatic associations I had towards certain groups of people. This experience highlights the importance of recognizing implicit bias and making conscious efforts to address it continually. I will make efforts to change certain behaviors to ensure I am not unknowingly supporting structural inadequacies.

3. How do you think that awareness of the existence of explicit and implicit bias might impact you as a health care manager or supervisor?

As a health care manager or supervisor, awareness of both explicit and implicit bias can help me make better decisions and provide equitable care to my patients. Recognizing and addressing explicit biases among staff and patients can promote a more inclusive and diverse work environment. Understanding implicit bias can help me improve patient experience and prevent unintentional harm to patients.

4. How do you think the awareness of implicit/explicit bias could impact patient-clinician interactions and patient outcomes?

Awareness of implicit and explicit bias can have a significant impact on patient-clinician interactions and patient outcomes. If clinicians are aware of their unconscious biases towards certain groups, they can consciously make efforts to address them during interactions with patients. This creates a more inclusive and comfortable environment for the patient, leading to a positive patient experience and improved patient outcomes.

5. What has been your biggest takeaway from this activity?

My biggest takeaway from this activity is the importance of recognizing unconscious or implicit bias in healthcare. This realization makes me more aware of my own biases and the need to address them continually. I also understand the importance of raising awareness among healthcare providers and patients to promote a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
