Guided Questions for Reflective Journal #2

The purpose of the reflective journals in this course is to build your reflective thinking which will lead to increased emotional intelligence (Riley, 2020). The second reflective journal will focus on self-management, one of the EI domains. Please be sure to complete all readings and surveys prior to answering guided questions. Responses should be substantive and not just a few sentences. This is about students having a better understanding of what makes an effective communicator. As this is a reflective journal, you are not required to provide references, but if you do use any citations, you will need to provide a reference list.

Instructions: Using this Word document, type your responses in a different color and upload to drop box. Please keep this document as this information will also be compiled into your midterm Self-Awareness paper.

Introduction:
Self-management is a crucial component of emotional intelligence that is necessary for effective communication. As a medical professor, it is important to help students understand the significance of self-management in their personal and professional lives. In this reflective journal, we will discuss self-management as an EI domain and its relationship to effective communication, stress management techniques helpful in an accelerated nursing program, motivation for success in the program, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and building skills in demonstrating warmth.

1. Define self-management as an emotional intelligence domain and what influence this has on becoming an effective communicator.

Self-management is the ability to understand and control one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, especially in stressful situations. It involves being self-aware and able to regulate one’s emotions to maintain a balanced perspective. Self-management is essential to becoming an effective communicator as it enables individuals to remain composed, empathetic and take sound decisions. Effective communication is about connecting with others on a deeper level, conveying thoughts and feelings in a clear and concise manner while considering the other person’s point of view. Self-management helps individuals understand their emotions and respond to others’ emotions in a positive manner, thereby building better relationships.

2. What stress management techniques have you found to be helpful while attending an accelerated or second degree nursing program? How do these strategies help you stay emotionally present in upsetting situations?

The nursing program can be very demanding, and stress management is crucial for success. The stress management techniques that I have found helpful while attending an accelerated nursing program include regular exercise, deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness. These techniques help me stay focused, calm, and grounded in upsetting situations. Daily exercise boosts my energy levels, lowers stress, and improves my focus. Deep breathing before exams or during hectic shifts helps me relax and stay calm. Meditation and mindfulness practices improve my emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and focus.

3. What motivates you to succeed in this program? Are you respectful in relationships with peers, professors, and administrators at the college? If yes, describe how you know you are respectful and if you answered no, how will you change your behaviors moving forward? Do you feel respected by others?

I am motivated to succeed in this program by my passion for patient care, a desire to make a difference in people’s lives, and the opportunity to learn and grow in a dynamic field. I endeavor to maintain respectful relationships with peers, professors, and administrators at college. I put my best foot forward to listen actively, ask questions, and collaborate with others. Respectful communication can be recognized through the use of polite language, open body posture, and a willingness to understand and respond to the views of others. If I ever feel disrespectful, I will make efforts to acknowledge my actions and seek corrective measures. I believe that respect is a mutual feeling that comes with consistent, empathetic and courteous communication.

4. Are you eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis? If yes, describe a typical meal and your exercise routine. If no, then what information or resources would you need to get started?

I believe that a healthy lifestyle is critical for succeeding in any field, including nursing. I do my best to eat a balanced and nutrient-rich diet while also exercising regularly. A typical meal for me consists of lean proteins, whole grains, and lots of vegetables. I also ensure that I drink lots of water and avoid processed or high sugar foods. In terms of exercise, I make it a point to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day, whether it’s running, swimming, or yoga. For those who are not exercising regularly, it is important to start by identifying their current fitness level and then devising a plan to gradually increase activity levels. There are many resources available, such as personal trainers, online fitness programs, and community fitness challenges.

5. How does self-management help to facilitate warmth behaviors (see Chapter 6 in Riley text)?

Self-management helps facilitate warmth behaviors by allowing individuals to regulate their emotions and respond in environments in a positive and open manner. As per chapter 6 in the Riley text, warmth behaviors are those that promote empathy, positive regard, and respect for others. By understanding one’s emotions, one can engage in effective problem-solving, empathize with others, and provide social support when required. Self-management also helps individuals to identify and adapt to cues of others’ emotions, thereby improving their communication and building better relationships.

6. What exercises can be used to build skills in demonstrating warmth?

Several exercises can be used to build skills in demonstrating warmth, such as active listening, practicing empathy, and maintaining positive regard for others. Active listening involves paraphrasing and restating what the other person has said to ensure that you understand what they are saying. Practicing empathy involves putting oneself in another person’s shoes and recognizing their perspective. Maintaining positive regard for others involves demonstrating open, non-judgmental behavior, and responding to others respectfully. These exercises can be practiced with friends, family, or colleagues to sharpen one’s skills in demonstrating warmth.
