1. The report will be a mini-literature review and evaluation of information on a specific chemical contaminant of interest from a human environmental exposure perspective. The report is due April 2nd 2019. 2. The intent is for students to learn more about chemical contaminant behavior in the environment and relevant sources of real human exposure to the contaminant. 3. The report must be typewritten, double-spaced, on 8.5” x 11” paper. The left margin is to be 1.5”; the right, top and bottom margins should be 1”. It can be submitted by email as a PDF or submitted bound hardcopy. 4. The report must include the following components (in the order given): Cover Page Letter of Transmittal/Covering Letter (addressed to Dr. Warren Kindzierski) preface material (number pages consecutively in lower case Roman numerals e.g. i, ii, iii…): Executive Summary Table of Contents List of Figures (include page numbers locating each figure) List of Tables (include page numbers locating each table) List of Symbols (if required) report text (number pages consecutively in Arabic numerals e.g. 1, 2, 3…): 1.0 Introductioni.e. use a numbering system to structure your report 2.0 for the body of the text 2.1 2.2.1 examples for numbering subsections 2.2.2 normally, don’t go to more than three levels of subheadings 2.2 … etc. 3.0 … etc. 4.0 … etc. 5.0 Conclusions orConclusions and Recommendations 6.0 List of References Section numbers for these last two will depend on how many sections you have in the body of the text. 5. References to technical literature must be made in the development of subject matter. The technical information is to be obtained primarily from technical publications. At least 15 references to technical journals/books/reports must be made. A minimum of 10 references must be from sources other than an internet website. 6. A list of references cited must be included in the report. The University of Alberta Code of Student Behaviour on plagiarism (30.3.2 Inappropriate Academic Behaviour) will apply and students should be aware that the rephrasing of reference material does not remove their obligation to cite the source of that information (refer to www.ualberta.ca/governance/resources/policies-standards-and-codes-of-conduct/code-of-student-behaviour). The format for references should follow guidelines attached. 2

7. Based on the above example, sections of the report that comprise Chapters 1 thru 5 with figures and tables should be at least 10 typed pages in length. 8. Tables, graphs and illustrations should be used effectively to present information. Be sure to cite the graph, figure or table explicitly in the text (a reader reads text and refers to illustrations when told to). Please pay attention to the visual quality of the illustrations used in the report. Make sure all labels, captions and legends are reasonably legible. Any figures reproduced from reference material, whether photocopies or redrawn, must be properly credited to the original author(s). TOPIC AREAS TO CONSIDER: Topics to discuss in a minor fashion (these topics combined should not take up more than 15% of the report content):

x Description of physical properties x Description of how contaminant affects health of exposed humans Topics to discuss in a “major” fashion (these topics combined should take up •85% of the report content): x Pathways/microenvironments/behaviors important for human exposure (air, water, soil, diet, non-workplace, workplace, etc.) x Reported concentrations or background levels in important pathways or microenvironments x Reported exposure limits (health-based, other) x Independent evaluation*** Contaminant choices: Acrylamide Organic Arsenic Inorganic Benzo(a)pyrene PAH 1,3-Butadiene VOC Cadmium Inorganic Carbon tetrachloride VOC Chromium Inorganic Dioxins (e.g., 2,3,7,8-TCDD) PIC/by-product of reactions w/Chlorine Ethylbenzene VOC Formaldehyde Gas Hexane VOC
