Description Art historians note that Baroque artists built on the naturalism of the High Renaissance but also strove to create more engaging art with an effort to evoke nothing short of a revelation in the viewer – a sense of the marvelous – so that the viewer thinks about the subject in a new way. To explore and present these ideas, choose an Italian Baroque sculpture or painting from the module or outside and present it to the class. What are some key facts of its cultural context? What characteristics remind your of the High Renaissance style and what elements are new? Is there a specific High Renaissance work of art that inspired it? Does it have a dramatic sense of a moment in time (a “baroque moment”)? Does it try to create a sense of wonder about its subject matter? How does it try to reach an audience and what is the message? How does the style relate to its function? Be sure to use information from the module and the required PDF readings posted below.
