Module 3 – Case

CHANGE-ORIENTED LEADERSHIP: TRANSFORMATIONAL AND CHARISMATIC LEADERS

Assignment Overview

Signature Assignment: Information Literacy, Introduced level

In MGT401, your information literacy skills will be assessed at the “introduced” level. The information literacy rubric will be useful for this purpose. In MGT420, they will be assessed at the “reinforced” level. Finally, in MGT422, your information literacy skills will be assessed at the “mastered” level. The grading rubric for information literacy at the undergraduate level has been developed to measure student success in meeting the MGT401 Case 3 expectations. Rubrics for the other two courses are included in their respective assignments.

For this assignment, you need to think about managers you have had in the past and select three who each best represent one of the three main leadership styles: charismatic, transformational, and transactional. Select a leader you have not used so far in this course. You can also select a well-known business leader who you are likely to find online information about their leadership styles. For instance, you might pick Bill Gates, Travis, Kalanick, Mary Barra, Elon Musk, or John Zimmer.

Case Assignment

After you have reviewed the background materials and done some research on your CEO or other well-known business leader of your choice, write a 3 – 4 full page paper (excluding title and references pages) to include at least three scholarly and peer-reviewed sources from the required or optional readings list addressing the issues below. Does your selected business leader meet the definition of a charismatic leader based on what you’ve read? Explain your answer using both the required background textbook readings as well as specific information you found about your selected business leader.

1. Does your selected business leader meet the definition of a transformational leader based on what you’ve read? Explain your answer using both the required background readings as well as specific information you found about your CEO or other business leader of your choice.

2. Does your CEO or other business leader of your choice meet the definition of a transactional leader based on what you’ve read?

3. Create a table in which you compare what you believe are the main benefits and drawbacks of the transformational
, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles.

Leadership Style

Pros

Cons

Transformational

Transactional

Laissez-Faire

4. Where do you see your own leadership style in the table today? Where were you in the table 5 years ago? Where do you see yourself in the table in 5 years?

Assignment Expectations

1. Your Case Assignment should be 3 –
4 full pages in length (excluding title and reference pages). This means the submission must be at least 3 full pages. It must include an introduction below the paper’s title prior to the answer to the first assignment question and a Conclusion on the last page before the References list page. There should be nothing in the top left corner of the paper and only a page number in the top right corner of all pages.

2. Be sure to cite and reference (using APA Style) a
minimum of 3 scholarly sources listed in the Course Materials and Bibliography (Module 3 Required and Optional Reading List), in the Module 3 Background Page: Required and Optional Readings, or in the Trident Online Library (peer-reviewed journal articles).

3. Upload your paper to the Module 3 Case Dropbox before the assignment due date.

4. Include both a reference page and in-text citations. Citation and reference style instructions are available at Trident University’s

Introduction to APA
.  Another resource is the “Writing Style Guide,” which is found under “My Resources” in the TLC portal, or the APA Manual (7th ed.)

The grading rubric for information literacy at the undergraduate level assesses student success in meeting the MGT401 Case 3 expectations related to information literacy.

Your submission will be assessed on how well you:

· Determine the extent of information needed

· Access the needed information

· Evaluate information and its sources critically

· Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

· Access and use information ethically and legally

· Timeliness

The references found online via a tool like Google, in the Trident Online Library, or in the courses may not be in correct APA format. For this reason, you are expected to research how to correctly format references. Do not just copy citations and expect them to be correct. The basic format of references are:

Author, A. B. (2020, December 25). Title of the article.
Title of the Academic Journal, 55(3), 23-28.

· 55 is the volume number for this fictitious example of a perfectly formatted reference of a journal article. Article titles are never typed in italics.

Author, A. B., Bolden, C., & Cheswick, D. E. (2023).
The art of leadership. John Wiley and Son.

· This is the reference format for a fictitious book. Book titles never begin every word with a capital letter, but they are always typed in italics. Notice the use of an ampersand before the last listed author.

MacMillan, P. (2020).
Modern paradigms of leadership [Video]. Alexander Street. Available in the Trident Online Library.

· This is the reference format for a video. The video title is always in italics.
