Week 5 Discussion

Discussion Question – Due Thursday – A reference and citation are required.

Nurses as Change Agents in the Community

In the chapter, “How Community-Based Organizations Are Addressing Nursing’s Role in Transforming Health Care,” the authors describe the community as the focus of advocacy action for change. They list a series of questions that help community teams develop organizing principles to guide their interventions, and the aim is to attack social determinants of health to make community change. Suppose a community team identifies lack of access to exercise modalities as a public health issue. If the team were to determine that pedestrian walkways need to be constructed:

  •
    • Discuss at least two factors that would facilitate the development of the walkways.
    • Discuss at least two factors that would hinder the development of the walkways.
      • Include in your discussions ways that the team might work to overcome those hindrances.
  • MUST ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS AND HIGHLIGHT QUESTIONS FOLLOWED BY ANSWER!!!!

Introduction: Lack of access to exercise modalities is a public health issue that can have negative consequences on the community’s overall health. In response to this issue, community teams can identify pedestrian walkways as a potential solution. However, the development of pedestrian walkways may face certain limitations that hinder progress. This discussion will highlight two factors that facilitate and two factors that hinder the development of pedestrian walkways in a community, along with possible solutions to overcome the hindrances.

Two Factors that Facilitate the Development of Pedestrian Walkways

1. Community Support: One of the essential factors that can facilitate the development of pedestrian walkways is community support. If the community sees the benefits of walkways and supports their development, the likelihood of initiation and commitment to the project increases. Public involvement in a project can also make the walkway development process more effective and efficient. Additionally, community engagement and support can help gain local government approval and secure funding for the project.

2. Safety Measures: Another significant factor that can facilitate the development of pedestrian walkways is the inclusion of safety measures. Walkways that prioritize the safety of walkers, runners, and cyclists on the roads make them more attractive to the community. Such measures may include reflective edges, pedestrian crossings with signals, and cameras for surveillance, which will encourage more community members to opt for walking as a mode of transport.

Two Factors that Hinder the Development of Pedestrian Walkways

1. Limited Financial Resources: The development of pedestrian walkways is often expensive, and limited financial resources can hinder the progress of such projects. The cost of materials, labor, and machinery can be overwhelming, making it difficult to fund the project. To overcome this challenge, community teams can come up with creative ways to access financing, such as forming partnerships with financial institutions to raise capital, soliciting donations from the community, or securing government grants.

2. Structural Barriers: Structural barriers, such as topography or existing infrastructure, can limit the development and effectiveness of pedestrian walkways. Communities with challenging terrain, including hills or unlevel terrain, might find it challenging to create a walkway that is safe for all users. Additionally, existing infrastructure like buildings, roads, or parking spaces may pose difficulties in finding adequate space for pedestrian walkways. To overcome this challenge, community teams can work with structural engineers and architects to design a walkway that is compatible with the community’s infrastructure while addressing terrain and space constraints.
